Candlelight VOX is an environment where learning thrives.
Candlelight VOX was developed as a space to enhance student learning and allow voice students at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music to realise their musical identities. We are proud to be entirely student-led - in that we are both student-conducted and student-administered.
Candlelight VOX is a space where one's musical ear is challenged to identify areas for improvement, and one's musical brain is asked to find a solution. When given an environment without a faculty member to immediately give us the solutions to musical "problems", we must learn to think on our feet and problem-solve ourselves. We are passionate about creating a dynamic and encouraging rehearsal environment, and take great pride in the subsequent development of our members and the musical excellence that ensues.
Candlelight is proud to have secured the support of MCMIgniteLAB via the 2019 "Chamber Challenge" grant, and has the ongoing support of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Library for assistance in purchasing sheet music.
Our goals:
Inclusivity Statement:
Candlelight VOX is proud to say that we operate as a safe and inclusive space for all LGBTQIA+ folks. We actively try to create a space where all are welcome to create and enjoy art, regardless of ability, experience or knowledge and have zero tolerance of identity driven violence, bullying or harassment. We encourage all members of our choir to let us know of their pronouns, to sing in which ever section their voice feels comfortable and discourage the archaic and binary gendered division between upper and lower voice parts. In performance, we encourage everyone to wear whatever style of concert blacks they feel most comfortable to perform in, and we encourage an ongoing discourse of how we can continue to create a welcoming and safe place for all genders and sexual orientations.

Our goals:
- To provide a training ground for tertiary-level music students and their peers to grow and enhance their musicianship.
- To foster the artistic independence of every ensemble member, and give them the space to realise their own musical identity.
- To create an environment where musical risk-taking is encouraged, failure is celebrated as a part of the learning process, growth-mindset is employed to encourage "grit" and perseverance, and musical breakthroughs are celebrated as a success for the entire team.
- To encourage the exploration of 20th and 21st Century repertoire and to work where possible with local composers in Melbourne.
- To provide high-quality performance experience for our members, collaborators, and audience which demonstrate both the development of the students and their musical excellence.
- To provide musical leadership opportunities - such as section-leading, conducting, rehearsal accompaniment, and program curating opportunities to any students who wish to extend themselves.
- To provide music management experience to any interested members via the committee, so that they may seek arts administration employment and have a framework for building their own chamber ensemble in the future.
- To fund, where possible, further tuition for members of the choir: in 2020, a number of group conducting lessons have been arranged with Nicholas Dinopoulos.
